When people think of a “bomber jacket”, the MA-1 is often what comes to mind first. However, it wasn’t the original. The MA-1 was actually inspired by its predecessors, the A-2 and B-15.

Marilyn Monroe: Old Hollywood meets the B-15

Thanks to its classic military design and versatile style, the Alpha Industries B-15 jacket has been a firm favorite among celebrities. In 1954, Marilyn Monroe toured Korea to entertain American troops. Over the course of four days, she performed a surprise show titled “Anything Goes” for over 100,000 homesick soldiers.

During these performances, Monroe was famously photographed wearing an oversized men’s B-15 WWII flight jacket. Reflecting on the experience, she said, “It was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I never felt like a star before in my heart. It was so wonderful to look down and see a fellow smiling at me.” This moment has since become a cherished part of her legacy.

B-15 vs. MA-1: Distinguishing features

The B-15’s distinguishing features include a removable faux fur collar, the Alpha logo stitching, and authentic tabs on the chest that were originally used to secure oxygen masks and headset wires for pilots. Aside from these details, the cut and nylon shell are identical to the MA-1, making the B-15 a great alternative for those who’ve seen enough of its famous successor—or for anyone who dreamed of becoming a pilot as a child.
